Situated on an extreme 100% slope, the house rises while respecting the terrain and preserving the natural profile, avoiding major excavations into the slate rock. Designed to adapt to the landscape, it barely touches the ground, supported by a few concrete screens that serve as structural elements, leaving the terrain practically untouched. This creates a built layer that integrates into the environment without losing its own identity.

Avinguda Catalunya 11 is a residential project located in the historic district of Sant Cugat del Vallès, at the outskirts of Barcelona. The client’s idea was to turn the house where she grew up in a special building that could contribute to the image of the neighborhood. The building comprises ten apartment units and two commercial spaces. As the site is located within the landmarked area, the design choices were made contemplating the construction guidelines’ rigor.

It is a house that would prefer to be more stuck in the ground. A house which seeks for its roots in a very clear and determined way. Radically deprived of any act that may hinder its real interest: the feet on the ground and the roof in the sky. The concrete structure and its screens end up defining the space almost prematurely; and the ceramic deck collects the reflections of the sun and the clouds. In this house the domestic space remains between the structure and the landscape.

The form and the position of the house is a response to the shape and aspect of the plot, closed on the street side and open to the city landscape. Each level has its own relationship with the external space. Vertical communication is a backbone that connects spaces on either side, it is closed at the entrance and it opens itself to the landscape in the upper floor.

A few months ago we published Student Housing in Sant Cugat del Vallès, a project by dataAE + HARQUITECTES, originally completed two years ago. The architects have kindly shared updated images of the project, which show how vegetation has become integrated into the façade of the building and in the courtyard. In addition, they sent Polaroid images—taken by the architects themselves—that demonstrate how the spaces have become appropriated and occupied by the students. The new dwelling house for university students is located in the same block as the Vallès Architecture School. The project proposed intends to keep its balance among the existing buildings, outside areas and the new dwelling house, which is formed from two parallel to street blocks layed out over two floors and separated by a central atrium.

The existing Social Center expands with a third new volume located at the south area of the building complex. This new wing redefines two patios of distinct character: the first courtyard is an enclosure and has a cloister character, and the second one is more opened and dynamic.
