The Cimendef building, designed by Périphériques architects in 2015, was supposed to be a media library. The opening of the library didn’t happen but the building itself was bought by the Region Reunion Office. The new owner decided to put different cultural facilities in it by mixing together the Regional Music School (CRR), the headquarter of an association promoting local music (PRMA), and a part of the Literature Regional Center (CLR). The building is brand new but it needs to be changed to welcome those new uses.

The new home sits on an existing 20’x34’ foundation. The concrete walls were repaired and reused, eliminating costly excavation and allowing the numerous mature trees on the site to remain undisturbed.

The Coven is a co-working space for women and those who identify as non-binary. The goal for the design of their flagship location in St. Paul, Minnesota was to transform a dark, historic space into a bright and warm space that encourages women’s empowerment and sets a strong foundation for the future. The goal of the design was to empower those that inhabit the space and create a sense of community and equity. The reception and open lounge take advantage of the high ceilings, natural light, and rich architectural character. The design team restored the historic details in the space and added unique custom features to match that level of detail.

The Palace Theatre was built in 1916 on the still smoldering ashes of the Library Building in the heart of St. Paul’s entertainment district. The theater began as a vaudeville house but quickly transformed into a movie theater, which it remained until closing in 1984. The theater was used on a short-term basis in 1986 and again from 2001 to 2004. Seven decades of use followed by three decades of decay left a deep and layered story. Each space within the building was imbued with a sense of history, dormancy and neglect. It was our task to tell this story, to make something compelling of these remnants in the heart of Minnesota’s capital city.

Working with the City of Saint Paul and the St. Paul Saints, an independent league franchise committed to providing a unique fan experience, the design team slipped a 7,000 seat ballpark into a remnant site between an interstate highway, an elevated bridge, a light rail operations facility and the historic Lowertown District on the edge of the City’s business district.
