The most sustainable building is the one that has already been built. The project for the new Unimed Federation headquarters in Porto Alegre stems from the need for adaptive reuse, expansion, and modernization of the former building. The proposal seeks to establish a new relationship with the already consolidated urban fabric, while, through the acquisition of three adjacent lots, the new complex is conceived as a delicate gesture of urban generosity: the new construction sets back from the street to create a public square, serving as a transition between city and building.

Navigating the inherent challenges of a narrow house nestled between other buildings – typical of urban plots with limited frontage and depth – we embraced the opportunity to transform its ground floor. The goal was to create a space that not only significantly elevates its habitability but also deeply reflects the vibrant essence of its owner, Beta. A woman full of life, a dedicated yoga practitioner, and someone who cherishes moments spent entertaining friends and family, Beta's dynamic emotional and cultural background became the guiding inspiration for this renovation. Infusing her personality into the very fabric of her home was a truly rewarding endeavor.

Located in one of the few exclusively residential neighborhoods in Porto Alegre, Casa Flor, designed by the Stemmer Rodrigues office, was built on a steeply sloping plot, facing a square of great emotional value for the clients, a young couple of university professors with two children, who were longtime residents of the area. The family participated in the reforestation of the square, so one of their main desires when buying the plot was for the house to make the best possible use of the view, while ensuring privacy from the street.

Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Porto Alegre is an important institution that manages a complex of several hospital buildings, whose layout configures an internal street called “Rua da Saúde”. Due to the established structure, there was previously no contiguous connection between the buildings. The client's desire was thus to have a connecting roof, which would harmoniously span over the buildings and define a new iconic outside space.

Located on flat land in a quiet street in the south of Porto Alegre, LC House arises from a general project that was launched based on a very unusual design premise, the implantation should be concentrated in the back of the lot, keeping the greatest distance possible from the frontal alignment, in addition, the building should occupy the land from side to side, leaving only a facade with the possibility of openings. These premises instigated us to seek a strategy to optimize the lighting and ventilation of environments, something that we always prioritize in our projects, especially residential ones. In this way, we created plans and volumes that stand out, thus managing to generate three facades with different orientations, in which there are several openings that face the garden in the front.

With about 400 m², the renovation carried out in this apartment located in Porto Alegre/RS - Brasil had to be strategic. Despite being large, the irregularity of the floor plan generates residual spaces worked by our project team to optimize the layout and circulations. The concrete beams diagonally crossed the rooms, for this reason, we tried to hide them with the plaster lining and we only left visible the solid slab in places that we consider appropriate for this gesture.

The client wanted the office to have good sound insulation, so we needed to have both rooms compartmentalized. We lengthened the waiting room from the entrance until we reached the limit for the forecast of a receptionist's table.

Sometimes we propose 1 or 2 volumes that are multifaceted and help in solving the program in general. In the case of this physiotherapy and osteopathy practice, we did not need considerable space for storage, so the most important was to propose free areas and fluidity (as a more abstract concept).

In the historic center of Porto Alegre, the Lido Hotel has been for years a reference on the search for accommodation in the capital of Brazil’s southernmost state, close to the Matriz Plaza and the Public Market. However, the new demand for small apartments has turned this hotel into a coliving building.
