Client brief called for the design of a new Science Centre for Nelson Mandela University and accommodating a new 150-seater digital planetarium installation. At the onset – the decision was taken to set the building back from the main arterial movement route on the eastern edge, thereby creating a public plaza and gathering space. The building's eastern edge along this plaza is then further extended as a landscape onto the public realm, thus creating a ‘living edge,’ allowing visitors to circulate both vertically and horizontally within a multi-leveled terrace.

The client brief called for the creation of a new ‘entrance’ building and identity for the Nelson Mandela University Ocean Sciences Campus, while also providing a series of dedicated academic spaces within a specialized research environment. The building is conceptualized as a large internal veranda space, articulated as a triple-volume, multi-layered foyer space which links the main circulation spine with the more private spaces within. The internal planning contains a number of dedicated research spaces, specialized laboratories, offices, and meeting areas as well as an eight-meter-deep diving tank used for training purposes, which also forms an integral part of the western façade articulation.

Since its inception in 2014, saga is involved in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. After completing two projects in Joe Slovo township, we initiated a new project in 2018 in Walmer township. Unlike most of the city’s townships, Walmer is located relatively close to the city center and is very well integrated into the rest of Port Elizabeth. Walmer’s ideal location within the existing urban fabric makes it a great place to experiment with different forms of integrated development, by working on developing the network and connections between the area’s residents and its surroundings.

The Port Elizabeth Opera House was originally designed by local architect George William Smith and opened its doors on 1 December 1892. Four additions followed - the first in 1911, followed by extensions in 1927, 1934 and 1985. The current Opera House is thus made up of five distinct parts which throughout the years have merged into a single building of a distinct neo-classical style. At present the Opera House is the oldest theatre in Africa and also the oldest operating theatre in the Southern hemisphere.

The inclusion of the building and greater campus into the surrounding context was one of the primary conceptual drivers.

This project takes place in Joe Slovo Township, located on the outskirts of Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Joe Slovo is a newly established township and only part of it benefited from the RDP housing program (Reconstruction and Development Program, action launched by the South African Government 20 years ago). The site where the project takes place has no facilities and no tar roads. The surroundings are mainly shacks made out of second hand wood and corrugated metal sheets. It is mainly un-serviced, there is no water, except one tap every two blocks, and only a few houses have electricity. A few years ago, noticing the lack of services dedicated to her community, one of the Joe Slovo's local, Patricia N. Piyani started a little creche in her own shack. It quikly got too crowded and she decided to build a dedicated building.
