La Mejicana looks for opportunities in the limitations. A project that consciously respects the existing and attempts to reduce interventions to a minimum. A special focus on reviving disregarded elements and reinventing interior and exterior spaces. This project is a renovation of an existing building. It would be impossible to build a new house in that proximity to the seafront, given the strict regulations in Spain for coast protection. The only allowed interventions for this existing building were repair, upgrade, structural consolidation, and energy improvement. Being expressly forbidden to increase the built volume. These restrictions have both strongly conditioned the development of the project and at the same time opened up unexpected possibilities. The transformation of the existing space is designed from a deep understanding of what is inherited from the original structure and its inhabitants, the conditioning factors of strict regulation, the needs of the new residents, and what the place gives.

It is a rural location, in the town of Cerponzóns, in a raised zone over the valley of the rivers Lérez and Rons, with good access from the national road and close to the city. The intervention aims to create a new artificial grass football field over the existing field and improve and increase the facilities with new buildings for the changing rooms, toilets, canteen, infirmary and a couple of warehouses, as well as a new lighting system for the football field.

With these premises, Sonia Portela approached us to design her first hair salon as a personal project, with clear intentions of setting an aesthetic trend that represents her professional ethics and her target clientele. The space, previously used for the same purpose, was outdated and cold, with details that took us back to the 1980s—the use of gold-colored trim, glass display cases, and an endless combination of elements that marked uncoordinated interventions over the years.

In 2010, when Murado & Elvira Architects won the competition to design the Public Library and Historic Archive of the city of Baiona (Spain), they decided to design a place that would convey a sense of domesticity to its users: they came up with the idea of a warm wooden dress, tailor-made for the ancient building. A dress that covers the interiors of the architectural body, leaving the exterior almost unchanged. The old Sancti Spiritus Hospital thus reconquered its original role, by becoming a new home for scholars and readers. And for tourists too. The city of Baiona, located on the west coast of Spain, is located along the Camino de Santiago and is visited every year by thousands of pilgrims. In addition, the Baiona Historic Archive is one of the most relevant in the area, preserving documents dating back to the discovery of Americas. Baiona was in fact the port where La Pinta, one of the three caravels led by Christopher Columbus towards the New World, arrived on its way back in 1493.

The Social Center for the O Gorgullón neighborhood, which holds the Pontevedra town hall, will be the first of a future web of social centers in other neighborhoods across the city. The interior has a simple, unspecialized organization which allows for a multi-functionality of use for people of distinct ages and interests.

The new Health Centre is located in A Parda, a recent urban sprawl area on the outskirts of the city of Pontevedra, where the recent expansion of the urban structure is still coexisting with rural areas. The building emerges in a large lot surrounded by different kind of buildings like the new Music School, apartment blocks and some other facilities still to be defined.
