Its design captures the eye, with low masses defining private zones that contrast with a dynamically folded metal plane that shelters the social zone. Changing hues of textured metal cast rhythmic shadows, recalling the ribs of a cactus, while rhythm masonry forms shield the interior from the western sun.

In the sun-kissed embrace of Paradise Valley, Arizona sits “Mockingbird,” a slung courtyard-style home designed by the architecture firm The Ranch Mine. The design elevates the spirit of its surroundings while breaking down the barriers between indoor and outdoor living, creating a home where the arid beauty of the desert meets the sophistication of modern living. As you approach the house, the first thing that captures the eye is the striking interplay of metal fins that adorn the exterior.

The architects focused the redesign on providing a new, indoor/outdoor living area with ample natural light, adding spaces that were lacking to accommodate their growing family, and reconfiguring the original home to make the most of the existing space.

We wish for lots of light, open space, and connection with the outdoors.” This response to a question that architecture firm The Ranch Mine asks every client before starting a project led down the unexpected path of reimagining the classic American Ranch house, a once popular style of house that faded in the late 20th century, for modern living in a new build called ‘Hive’ in Paradise Valley, Arizona.

The Thurston Wine House Addition carefully displays a respect for its context through its materiality and its tectonic language while expressing its unconventional program through its formal elements. Embedded into the topography of the site, the project takes advantage of its section by using the slope to decrease the visual impact of structure, allowing access to the northeast valley and McDowell Mountain views beyond. The Wine House also benefits from the thermal storage capacity of the earth itself, greatly reducing the demand of the mechanical systems throughout the year.
