The Enoura site, situated on a hilly citrus grove in the Kataura district of Odawara, offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Bay of Sagami. The facility was envisioned by contemporary artist Hiroshi Sugimoto as a forum for disseminating art and culture both within Japan and to the world and comprises a gallery space, two stages, a tea house, and other features that make the entire premise into a truly magnificent landscape.

Located in a terraced residential district, the lot for this project was half flat and half sloping. Nearby is Odawara Castle, built in the 15th century. The property looks down on the neighborhood that grew up around the castle, and beyond that Sagami Bay and Enoshima island in the distance. The client, who was born and raised in Odawara, wanted a relaxing home where he and his family could look out on this familiar yet constantly changing landscape.

“This is the worst space I have ever encountered,” claimed Hiroshi Sugimoto in regards to the OMA-designed main gallery space at Seoul’s Leeum Samsung Museum of Art. Not a stranger to criticism, the Japanese photographer has decided to take museum design into his own hands, drafting what he claims to be the “ideal museum” on a coastal site in Japan’s Kanagawa Prefecture.
