The name ‘Sjøhavn’ was inspired by the client’s Scandinavian origin and meant ‘Sea Gardens.’ Situated within the Noosa River network in Australia, the location is well known for being a place of leisure and relaxation for locals and tourists. Being riverfront, the house required a design response sensitive to flood levels. The underlying principle of the project was to design a family home that responded to the natural surroundings while creating an overall sense of connection and providing interstitial spaces for retreat and privacy. A connection between the ground plane and the river’s edge was an important consideration identified during the initial briefing.

Project Description - Witta is a heavily landscaped, waterfront, courtyard house that mediates between the opportunities (and constraints) of a site that has its aspect and view on opposing edges. The “C” plan is the intuitive manifestation of this challenge, with the southern edge of the “C”, a transparent, light-filled pavilion offering a transparent and connected to the water’s edge. The concrete skeleton provides a robust base to the charred timber cap that expresses itself as a “shoji” screen to the north, while the southern edge is defined by a landscaped “fringe” that adorns the house. This is a house of two personalities, with an introverted street facade and an extroverted relationship to the Noosa River. The materials, form, skylights, and planning all center and celebrate the sense of being riverfront and how best to engage with it in a casual, enduring way.

Glennon residence is a contemporary floating timber box with a twist, located in Noosa Heads, Queensland. This project showcases the beauty of what a modest budget can achieve in home design for a father, young adult son, and teenage son that differs from your typical home. The plan was developed on the need for separate zones for the trio, as well as incorporate a space downstairs in which guests could stay and feel they had their own space to escape. The budget was tight, hence, as seen, a box on box approach was adopted.

Mitti Street House is situated in a low-lying area at the eastern edge of Little Cove bordering Noosa National Park. The house and courtyards are elevated slightly above natural ground to deal with flash flooding, which occurs with the monsoonal rains. It is lovely to experience the rain but mosquitoes can be fierce!
