The headquarters building in Ipae-dong, between a residential area and a factory, began at the request of a company trading Japanese alcohol. The site is located in Ipae-dong, Namyangju, Gyeonggi-do, and although it is a general residential area, it is surrounded by a cluster of factories and warehouses. The unique point is that the site has very unfavorable conditions for planning as it is located within an urban planning facility and is adjacent to an existing road, and because it is a residential area, it has disadvantages such as limited access to sunlight and the need to resolve roads and levels. In addition, due to noise and flying dust from the surrounding industrial area, it had somewhat uncomfortable conditions for being located as an office building. When I visited the site, I noticed that the existing building had already been demolished and the surrounding area was densely surrounded by factories and warehouse buildings, so I began to worry about how to approach the image of the new office building.

It was designed over two years and has a total floor area of 1004㎡. At the request of Namyangju City, it was built with a dedicated area of 89㎡ and three stories above the ground to commemorate Jeong Yak-yong, who built Suwon Hwaseong Fortress with heavy equipment.

Lots of brands are moving from offline shops to online shops with the trend of untact society resulted from COVID-19. Consumers are no longer interested in offline shops that only sell products. To revive offline shops, there should be special factors except selling only products that can attract consumers. Spyder Haven, located in Namyangju city, Gyeonggi do, plays its role as a complex sports and culture space as well as an outlet shop meeting the trend.

There is a small village in Namyangju-si. It is not a large village with large residential houses, but similar to small countryside villages of our childhood memories on holidays. The village isn’t occupied by young folk, but with elders. It’s not only the elders that make the time pass slowly, but the construction of the buildings may have to do with it. Tired of life’s troubles and health, homeowners flock to this village and hope to live with their parents here.

Located in Namyangju, adjacent to Seoul, this high school building explores new possibilities of the educational architecture through the dialectical interpretation of such complexity and simplicity.
