Years ago, inspired by the Paula Rego Museum designed by Eduardo Souto de Moura, we had a transformative experience that profoundly influenced our vision for Casa Emma. Entering the museum, we felt an immediate, indescribable serenity under one of its pyramids, where light filtered softly through a high skylight. Golden rays gently bathed every surface, casting shadows and reflections that gave the space a unique warmth. It was as though the light itself embraced and protected us, creating a profound sense of peace.

Built on top of a commercial space with a central structural pillar, a cross-shaped modulation was proposed to generate the four spaces requested by the client. The division was generated through low and thick walls made of steel structures, which were covered with rectangular clay tiles. These walls allowed for embedding bookshelves and storage areas due to their ample depth. At the top of these walls, clear glass was placed to allow light to pass from the windows facing the exterior to the more secluded spaces. The fronts of the office spaces and conference room were generated through wooden frames and textured glass partitions to provide the necessary privacy without interrupting the entry of natural light. The entrance hall greets the user with a wall covered in natural stone from petrified roots, which reminds us of the company's essence and its sustainable commitment to the environment.

The FM warehouse is an industrial facility adjacent to an existing steel foundry meant to grow in space. The building was designed according to what we consider the most important characteristics site-wise: its location next to the existing construction and its access from two streets (north and south). The street on the south is a commercial corridor for the city of Morelia, due to its importance, we decided to emplace the warehouse facing the north part of the site, in order to eventually design another type of building facing the main street. An open-air lane is placed on the west side of the terrain in order to take distance from the neighbour. The north-south lane material is a concrete cobblestone pavement that lets the rainwater drain into the earth.

The inspiration behind this project is derived from carefully listening to the subtle murmurs and whispers of environments like this, as well as the client's search for protection and shelter. How can one feel protected? What can be done when one feels vulnerable? This question was accompanied by an image, or perhaps a memory: a frightened child covering himself with a light bed sheet as he peeks out to make sure he can see what is going on around him. Pulling a bedsheet over ourselves is a very elemental act that alludes to the most basic part of the self; a bed sheet hides protects, wraps, and creates a space beneath it that is so safe and intimate as to keep away any spirit, ghost, or demon that may be surrounding the room. At the same time, this project generates a continuity in the beautiful living surface around the land, forming a new hill in a place already surrounded by many.

As part of the solutions, the management of the campus has now given great importance to the architecture, because through the thirty years of operation it’s been built by self-construction of multiple buildings, all in different stages and contexts, that has led to a multiplicity of styles with an extensive variety of materials, creating chaos of uses and environments that do not point to the education promotion.
