Settling into the mountainside - Set on a dramatically steep site, the residence unfolds across two levels, totaling over 700 square meters. The compact, buildable area required blasting through rock, much of which was then repurposed for landscaping and retaining walls. Managing the runoff from the mountainside posed its own challenges, requiring careful water control around the 40-meter-long structure. The landscaping was designed to allow the lush natural vegetation to reclaim its place. Within the municipality of Lac-Tremblant-Nord, strict environmental regulations—such as a ban on visible exterior lighting—ensure the protection of local fauna, including the unafraid deer that roam freely and almost invite touch. True to its philosophy, MU Architecture crafted a roofline that suggests a vast residence, while concealing a lower garden level entirely from view. This understated approach, characteristic of the firm and its clientele, favors elegance and restraint over ostentation.

Nestled at the base of a hill within the Quartier 8 development of Mont Tremblant, Quebec, the Q8 Residence derives its name from its unique location. Embraced by a wooded landscape, this home seamlessly integrates contemporary architectural design with the tranquility of its natural surroundings. Approaching the residence, you encounter a closed fa.ade with minimal openings, effectively turning its back to the road. The lack of windows on this side not only offers seclusion but also minimizes heat loss during the colder months, contributing to the home's energy efficiency.

Located on Lac Tremblant, one of Québec’s most highly esteemed lakes, the site presented features as spectacular as they were restrictive. Very steep terrain and high rock cliffs allowed few options for implementation or traffic on the site. A very large flat rock cap on the edge of the lake was chosen as “level 0” and allowed creation of the architectural project’s anchoring identity. Offered as a kind of natural balcony over the lake, this cap had the special advantage of proximity to high cliffs, bordering the part of the land opposite the large body of water, and allowed a full appreciation of the monumentality of this natural setting.

Context and setting
La Maison Gauthier is located in the Laurentians, in Quebec, near the town of Mont-Tremblant. It is set in a hilly terrain and is surrounded by a dense expanse of forest characteristic of this mountainous region. The lot is located on a rocky hill covered with spruce and birch. It is bounded to the east by the main road and to the west by the owners’ horse farm. The clients wanted a volume with views largely oriented towards the horses’ riding arena below. At the same time, they wanted to take advantage of the intimacy created by the topography of the lot. The forested berm between the road and house creates a visual filter, allowing a sequential progression towards the building. The volume is not visible from the main road below, but gradually emerges, culminating in the imposing facade of opaque brick with a single off-centered arch. This is the main entrance to the house.

Built on a mountainside with incredible views of Mont Tremblant, the Thibault residence questions the obvious nostalgia of traditional architecture imbedded within most of the large residential developments built in natural areas and intended for tourists or for secondary residences for city dwellers.
