Mazatlán is a city in the Pacific Coast that maintains a humid and high temperature climate great part of the year, invites to think about an architecture that in principal faces climate and consider the high degree of salinity of the site. The strategy for this school should aim to both minimize the impact of heat in the classroom; this without losing natural illumination and relation to the outside, as well as the use of materials and constructive system that were little prone to corrosion.

Originally built on 1915 and inspired by sea pools in Lisbon, the Carpa Olivera was a social center on Olas Altas beach in the Historic Center of Mazatlan. Many famous people of that time gathered and socialized here, and it was a must for every tourist. In 1954 it was devastated by a hurricane, leaving it in abandonment, but with time people came to use the pool. In the year 2004 it had a remodeling that soon fell into neglect and vandalism.

The proposal comes from the client's requirement to generate a visual insight throughout the house by way of an indoor patio, ensuring that its function is not only decorative but also practical. The solution was to create an entrance to the residence through this patio, which helped us not only to provide these natural views, light and ventilation to the area but also to create a pathway from the street that allows you to discover a green and silent atmosphere. The welcoming feeling that the patio produces lengthens the entrance, where the patio becomes a passageway to the house and not just the face to the street.

Inspired by Mazatlán’s nickname, “The Pearl of the Pacific”, the design resembles an oyster with a pearl at its centre. This “pearl” is a geodesic dome, bringing together views of the sky with views of the city and sea.
