The house is situated in a unique mountain meadow enclave within a highly protected area of the Krkonoše National Park. It stands on the site of the original cottage; new structures are otherwise not permitted in this zone. The building's floor plan was determined by the size of the building lot, which corresponds to the footprint of the original cottage. Both the lot and the house extend from south to north, creating a roof with a variable slope (45° in the south, 41° in the north).

The cottage is situated on a beautiful plot on a hillside at the edge of an area called Nové domky (New Houses) in the Krkonoše Mountains. It follows the scattered development of the surrounding cottages both urbanistically and visually. The shape of the building is simple, based on the classic form of a mountain cottage – a rectangular floor plan horizontally set into the slope. The volume of the building consists of a lower floor cube complemented by a gable roof with upper floors.

The client’s brief was to design a functional, compact building for the manager of a ski resort within the built-up area of the Horní Malá Úpa village. The morphology of the cross is derived from the traditional construction in the Krkonoše National Park area, but also clearly defines views into the surrounding landscape, towards Sněžka or the summit of Lysečina.

In the exceptional context of the mountain village of Malá Úpa, we designed a house for friends that draws inspiration from historical buildings in the Krkonoše Mountains, utilizing centuries-old knowledge of mountain living and transforming it for contemporary residential needs. The house is positioned towards the western sloping mountain meadow of the boundary ridge, confirming local customs both in its distance from the road and alignment of the ridge. It echoes the shape of historical mountain houses while incorporating contemporary architectural principles.

The building is located in the north-eastern part of the village Horní Malá Úpa, right next to the road leading to the border with Poland. The view from the building is onto Pomezní Hřeben and Malá Úpa river valley, and, next to the road, the ski runs in the nearby ski resort.
