A new exhibition marking 150th anniversary of Czech entrepreneur Tomáš Baťa, founder of the global Baťa Shoe Company, explores Baťa's achievements and guiding principles and their realisation in East Tilbury, Essex. It reveals how ideas about work, culture, sport, health and community were embedded in the design of the built environment.

The exhibition unfolds in two complementary strands. 'Desire to Create' presents Baťa’s legacy as a comprehensive philosophy, uniting work with service, enterprise with education, and personal development with responsibility towards others - not as a relic of the past, but as a continuing source of inspiration. Baťa’s 'Architecture of Belonging'

The Exeter Road Pavilion is an adaptive reuse of a modest Victorian garden outbuilding in northwest London, redesigned for an art collector and amateur DJ who wanted a place equally suited to storing books, records, and artworks as to hosting garden gatherings, workouts, and the occasional ping-pong match. Our brief was twofold: create an interior cabinet for storage and an exterior canopy for shelter. From the outset, we saw these as a single architectural problem rather than two separate tasks.

The space has been conceptualised and designed by architect and artistic director Sumayya Vally, Counterspace, whose practice is internationally recognised for redefining cultural typologies through community, memory, and ritual. Envisioned as an incremental unfolding — a gathering of gatherings — the headquarters will grow and evolve, responding to how people use and inhabit it. At its heart, the project is less about static architecture and more about an ongoing choreography of space, activated by dialogue, learning, and exchange. As a space that will grow over time through response, adaptation, and use, the project is a living framework, and many of its elements offer multiple configurations to accommodate and generate a plurality of encounters. "Because of the fever-dream speed with which the project has come into being, our approach reflects this moment — incremental and alive," says Sumayya Vally, Architect-in-Residence of the new Ibraaz space.
