French architecture studio Coldefy has completed Hannah Arendt House, a development of 43 sustainable social homes in the Rives de la Haute-Deûle district of Lille, northern France, with a sensitive design that integrates architecture, landscape, and community. Situated between an urban park and the Deûle River at the junction of the EuraTechnologies Grande Pelouse (Great Lawn) and the Quai Hegel, the scheme is part of a larger urban redevelopment that aims to create spaces that are not only livable but also economically and environmentally forward-thinking. Hannah Arendt House has been awarded France's E+C-label (Positive Energy and Carbon Reduction Buildings).

The first area to be completed of the Rives de la Haute Deûle development zone is a former post-industrial wasteland stretching over 100 hectares, located on the western edge of the city of Lille. The terrain, marked by largely varying scales between existing industrial, religious, and residential buildings, lies along the Deûle canal. The canal provides a gentle demarcation between this neighbourhood's southern and northern parts, both undergoing major urban renewal. The presence of a waterway, a powerful element in the landscape, is an important and enhancing asset.

At the heart of a dynamic neighbourhood in the Porte de Valenciennes joint development zone (ZAC), the Partenord plot seeks to bring Lille into the third industrial revolution through a mixed project, including the headquarters of Partenord Habitat (Nord Department Public Housing Office), offices, housing and shops. The project is on a plot in a strategic location, at the entrance to the city of Lille, and at the corner of Rue de Cambrai and Boulevard de Belfort. The building emerges from the ground along both these two roads in three distinct sections: the offices, the headquarters and the housing, tied together with a shared foundation.

The brief for Residence G was to create a countryside lifestyle in harmony with its surroundings. The starting point was the Comte de M. 19th century farm building, constructed in a U-shape around a courtyard, nestled in a fantastic natural setting surrounded by the edge of a forest, a haven of biodiversity. It is located alongside a golf course running through the forest.

Designed in partnership with the Gaëtan Le Penhuel firm, this garden block extends Euralille’s operations further to the south. It is part of a location undergoing total urban transformation within the Porte de Valenciennes area, at the crossroads of various developmental timelines, in a diverse, rich, and complex urban context. The overall form of the project stems from particular attention to this environment: in its shape and sweeping view, it provides a counterpoint to the powerfully urban perspective of Boulevard Hoover, and, closer in, to the linkage between these two contrasting urban textures, somewhere between the contemporary architecture of Euralille housing and the Moulins quarter.

The Jean Rostand school is located in the heart of the Epine district, south of Hellemmes. The neighbourhood was primarily designed for railway workers in the seventies. Cornered between beltways and railroads, it is quite unknown to Lille’s inhabitants. There is a lot at stake for the municipality to promote such a project. The new school complex is indeed meant to unload the whole city of Hellemmes and support the district’s renewal. The school complex hosts 5 preschool classes, 8 primary school classes, and a lunchroom. It can receive about 360 children in total.

The CMA is set along the edge of the former Seventeenth Century Vauban fortification, now replaced by a high-speed ring road. The northern border of the site is defined by a railway line and the botanical garden — Jardin des Plantes de Lille. To the south, Rue Abélard defines the perimeter of a wider masterplan area designed by KAAN Architecten and PDAA, and comprising of CMA headquarters, a future complex of five buildings and a lush park spanning the site as an extension of the nearby garden.

This project is located around the edges of the water garden in the ZAC (joint development zone) Rives de la Haute Deûle. It extends from the refurbished Le Blan-Lafont factory and the Hegel quay, which runs along the Haute Deûle Canal. The quality of the site is the fact of associating the monumentality of the framing of the Le Blan-Lafont factory with the poetic landscape of the water garden.

The Doge, a 5,100 square meter office building, intended to welcome young startups, is situated in the joint development zone of Rives de la Haute Deûle in Lille, in the heart of EuraTechnologies. The architectural competition in 2011 imposed a strict limitation, requiring the use of terracotta, historic materials from the immediate surroundings and the region. The structure designed by Atelier Tarabusi, and handed over in 2017, proposes an unexpected, inventive and pertinent architectural approach. Just across from the old Le Blan-Lafont factory, the environment is characterized by the presence of large industrial buildings, which are either rehabilitated or undergoing transformation; and by the small scale strips of workers housing.

The competition for a new mixed-use building in Lille piqued our interest both in its unprecedented mixture of program and its prominent triangular site in the heart of the new district of Porte de Valenciennes. The brief outlined a 70-cradle nursery, a 200-bed youth hostel, and an office dedicated to social and economic innovations all collected under one unified roof; a tall order even by multifunctional building standards. Rather than simply dividing horizontally by level or vertically by mass, our solution combines efficient organization with a programmatic strategy that converts the geometric constrictions of the site into social amenities, and resolves the seemingly contradictory functions in an intertwined social spiral.

The Moulin Junior High School is located in the southern area of Lille, in a neighborhood that has undergone major transformations in recent decades. Mainly occupied by a population of workers, this neighborhood possesses an urban fabric that is still largely one of brick buildings, factories and buildings related to freight whose renovation has spurred a renewal of the entire neighborhood (as illustrated in reconversion of the Saint- Sauveur train station for example).
