Located in Itacaré, on the southern coast of Bahia, Bungalow Txai occupies a high slope facing the sea. From the site, the view opens nearly 180 degrees over the ocean, rising above the existing palm and coconut trees. Secluded in the midst of nature, the house is organized around a direct relationship with the topography, vegetation, and climate.

In Itacaré, in southern Bahia, where the Atlantic Forest meets the ocean in a landscape of almost absolute intensity, Terramar House is precisely sited. Located in the Vila São José residential complex, the residence occupies a narrow and challenging hillside plot, featuring a 46-foot (14-meter) elevation change and a depth varying between 39 and 65 feet (12 and 20 meters). Only about 40% of the lot was buildable due to condominium restrictions and the trapezoidal geometry itself, which is defined by two 164-foot (50-meter) fronts—an upper one, providing the main access, and a lower one, facing the street that leads to the beach.

On accepting the responsibility of creating a Hotel-Residential project in a site with such beauty – an idyllic sanctuary open to the sea and protected by the Atlantic forest – a guideline immediately comes to mind: to respect and to emphasize the beauty of the place and its views, not only of the ocean but also of the preserved forest surrounding it, looking to integrate the project with the landscape instead of imposing itself into it.

The Txai Housemerges elements of the vernacular colorful Bahian Houses with the precise lines of Brazilian Modern architecture. Located in front of a beautiful beach in the city of Itacaré – in the Brazilian northeast – the site of Txai Housereaches 13 meters above the sea level. This topographical condition allowed for, even with the existing treetops, a beautiful view of the coast.

Between the cities of Ilhéus and Itacaré, the exuberant native Mata Atlântica (Atlantic Forest) and a sea of palm trees dominate the landscape. The area is a forest reserve protected by entities such as Unesco and Ibama, and is a target of strict constructive restrictions. In order to make an intervention possible to accommodate the program of a resort, the buildings were distributed as follows: a club with a restaurant and leisure rooms, a spa, 16 bungalows and a service district. Instead of enslaving nature, the buildings dramatized the landscape even more, framing and revealing contours and unusual scenarios.
