People are influenced by built space, so we planned Songsan Middle School to have a variety of building groups and yards so that children can grow up in a village-like landscape that changes just by moving a few steps. We all want to raise our children to be more open-minded and endeavoring. And to do so, the fundamental shape and structure of the school needs to change. School buildings should be broken down into smaller blocks, with small yards and outside spaces in various shapes and forms in between the blocks where they can play around. I think our kids' school should feel more like a “Smurfs’ Village” than one large building, which is the standard layout of schools seen in Korea.

The hut (mak, 막) is one of humanity's earliest forms of shelter, a simple structure made of a roof and ground, often without walls, shaped by and responsive to the site's conditions. In contrast, contemporary architecture tends to disregard its environment, contributing to cities filled with dense and disconnected spaces. What we now need is a gap (teum, 틈) within our cities, where natural elements can once again be felt. Teummak, combining teum (gap) and mak (hut), proposes a new kind of openness in urban life.

Prologue: New Downtown Church - We believe that there is another landscape created when a new building blends into the existing landscape, so we consider it very important to read and understand the context and landscape around the site in the design process. However, Banwol-dong, Hwaseong-si, where the subject site of this project is located, is a neighborhood that is shaping a new downtown through urban development projects. Therefore, there were two main points we focused on in this project. First, "What should the church look like in the new landscape being created, not the existing landscape?" Second, "What should the church look like in the urban landscape?". Although most buildings have a long lifespan, churches, especially, are places that connect religion and people, so they repair old buildings and expand them when space is lacking, always standing in the same place. Since we fully understood this, designing the church, which will stand here for a long time in the future, was a very careful and cautious task. Moreover, since the surrounding landscape was in the transitional phase of being created, we did not know how it would turn out, but we thought it should be made to match the future completed landscape. Fortunately, the site was being developed through an urban development project, and it was clear that the building would be located in an urban landscape in the future. In conclusion, we came up with a simple and calm church that would naturally blend into the urban landscape and match whatever the surrounding landscape would look like.

To implement a new funeral culture, Haeahn Architecture planned Hwaseong Hambaeksan Memorial Park as a place of light and nature to console the deceased’s family and mourners, commemorating the memory of the deceased as the park completes the scenic beauty of the area in harmony with Mount Hambaek. Hwaseong Hambaeksan Memorial Park is a user-oriented funerary cultural complex. As the place harmoniously embraces the surrounding nature and softly touches the sky, we applied the design concept “the Forest painted with the Sky”, Haeahn Architecture allocated all facilities along the one-stop circular route in consideration of the ceremonial procedure, from funeral services to cremation to enshrinement.

We could cover the several blue sandwich panel roofs in the village by raising the fence. Then, it seemed to be wonderful that the harmony of the green yard, the horizon of the fence, the sky above it, the small hill near the east, and the far view open to the southwest. The house had to be placed quietly behind the landscape and a device to contain them.

The first thing he said to us was that he wanted to build a detached house but build it well. That’s what most architects say. Who wouldn’t want to make it well? In the architecture market of distrust, we feel sorry for the client, saying, ‘I won’t be fooled.’ The client, who returned after asking some questions, didn’t contact us for a long time as we expected. Finally, after about a month, the client revisited us and said, “I was torn between low design costs and local builders’ houses, but now I want to stop thinking about it and want to be with us”….
