Given the center’s importance within Herning, the competition called for a new approach to the site’s physical organization, to provide more coherent and functional relationships with the surrounding context in order to host larger events in the future and serve as an even bigger tourist attraction.

The estate consists of five blocks, the design of which is based upon a wish of creating a flexible concept able to contain different accommodation units within the same idea and idiom. The buildings were made so that they can be adapted to each individual resident and to the demand and will consequently be suitable for a wide segment of residents. The flats in the five blocks are situated around a centrally placed staircase (the core of the house); on the ground floor there is a parking area (also for bicycles) for the residents, depots and rooms for garbage cans.

The Herning Center of the Arts unites, for the first time, three distinct cultural institutions: the Herning Art Museum, the MidWest Ensemble and the Socle du Monde. The new Center is intended to be an innovative forum combining visual art and music. The design fuses landscape and architecture in a one-level building that will include permanent and temporary exhibition galleries, a 150-seat auditorium, music rehearsal rooms, a restaurant, a media library, administrative offices and an active landscape. The design for the center aims at "building the site".
