Gitti is a Gyeongbuk dialect meaning 'corner.' When facing the quiet and serene corner land facing the royal tomb, Jinpyeongwangneung, it seemed more appropriate to express the appearance of the land as it is than other languages that reveal the regionality or history of Gyeongju. This intention was reflected in the process of deriving the mass and the internal space plan, and the name of the place, 'Gitti,' was ultimately derived from Gitti.

Nature’s shape and architecture - It is encircled by mountains, and it has an open mid-view through the frontal road and a far view of the mountain valley that continues to the south. This rural village has only small-scale transformations without a trace of active development activities. This project started with the philosophical question of what kind of architectural attitude should accompany a place located amid a natural topographical flow.

Muuun Hotel / NOMAL + ONJIUM Housing Studio

Muuun is a small hotel with two individual houses. Muuun means 'The place where mist and cloud befriend' It locates close to 'Samreung' forest, which is well known for its beautiful scenery with the mist. Entering the forest full of mist is very surrealistic. Exiting from the surreal atmosphere gives a new perspective on facing ordinary life under the blue sky and the cloud. This project intends a similar experience through the architecture. The project's early study was the research of various 'hanok'(A traditional Korean house). Indeed, one question came to mind about the stereotype of hanok. Could hanok be defined as a specific era or genre? To rethink this stereotype, Muuun kept the idea without being bound by a particular concept, such as modern reinterpretation or keeping the tradition.

The site is located in Haseo-ri and Suryeom-ri, Yangnam-myeon, Gyeongju on a hill 30m above sea level. It commands a magnificent view of the sea and coastline to the east and south and overlaps with low mountains at the tip of the Taebaek Mountains to the north and west. This facility is home to the University Gyeongju Campus for union workers at Hyundai Motor’s Ulsan plant and the Global Partnership Center for business partners. I embarked upon this project with the question: ‘What is the difference between a corporate training center and a resort hotel?’
