The apartment was designed for a couple without children who decided to move from a single-family housing estate to a historic tenement house in the very center of the city. An unquestionable distinguishing feature of the previously unused attic is the wooden roof truss. Numerous posts, beams, struts, and braces create an effective structural system, which is the main inspiration for the project.

From the first conversations with customers sml. house was supposed to be pragmatism and care for the natural environment. Common sense in the selection of materials, keeping the functional program in check, zoning the rooms, a compact body and individual formal and technological solutions meet these original assumptions.

The building is located in the economic zone of Nowe Gliwice, established on the site of the former coal mine KWK Gliwice. The area is gradually being reclaimed into a new function in which damage caused by human activity is effectively replaced by new usable value - architecture. The main task was to combine the office and warehouse functions in a way that ensures work comfort while clear functional separation.

The main goal of the investment was to realize an A class office building by creating a modern and functional accountancy center for Roedl & Partner with flexible open space favoring comfortable work and gastronomical area located at the ground level of the building. The building is part of the complex in which an adaptation of old granary for lofts (housing and services function) and two garage buildings were realized. It is planned to realize two more newly designed housing buildings as well as to adapt former bakery building for housing and services purposes.

The interest in postindustrial objects is not new phenomenon. It begun in the ’50, when a culture of American lofts used as cheap flats and atelier for artistic avant-garde was born. Gradually sanction of postindustrial tissue as life and living aesthetics was extended to the new bourgeois classes by which the revitalized object or postindustrial area started to compete with accredited and wealthy districts. Such situation is currently happening in Poland, where media interest in lofts is huge. Hence, the decision about adaptation of former granary seems to be right.
