World’s first public net-surplus-energy building—it generates more energy than it consumes. The new building of the first construction phase of the new town hall in Freiburg im Breisgau with its administration center and day nursery is the world’s first public building built to the net-surplus- energy standard and accommodates the 840 employees of the City Administration under one roof after they had previously been spread over 16 different sites throughout the city. The new administration centre, which is part of the town hall extension for the City of Freiburg, is designed to provide a stimulus for upgrading the Stühlinger area of Freiburg in terms of town planning and urban design and to provide a greenbelt link between Eschholz Park and the University Hospital.

The initial library, dating from the 70s showed architectural and energetic deficiencies and had to be rebuilt. By cutting away parts of the building, Degelo Architects not only reduced the disproportionately large volume of the old library, but also made the building react to its urban context. Thus the building became a cut diamond. The façade of this crystalline sculpture is composed of electrochemically treated chrome steel.

The "ZKD" is a two story art depository used by several museums of the city of Freiburg (Germany) and by different foundations. It contains various art and museum objects with very different but constant conservational requirements on climate an temperature. Those conservational requirements had to be harmozied with high demands on fire protection and safety and the clients request on very low energy comsumption and sustainability for a very moderate budget. The building should be the First Art-Depository built as a „Passivhaus“.

Concept
Two churches, one Protestant and one Catholic, have been erected in one building on the central square of a new district of the city of Freiburg, Germany. The building is designed in fair-faced concrete both on the inside and out. The design of the multi-aisle structure makes it possible to move the limiting inner walls of both churches to the side and then use the resulting area as an ecumenical church space.
