With "The Frankfurt Prototype," students from the Städelschule and Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences (Frankfurt UAS), under the academic direction of guest professor Dr. Niklas Maak, have realized a pioneering architectural project in the courtyard of the Senckenberg Research Institute. Initiated and conceptually guided by Maak, the temporary structure features an open, multifunctional market hall on the ground floor and flexible living and working spaces on the first floor, designed specifically for students. The building promotes social interaction and a connection to nature, integrating sustainable materials and adaptable spatial concepts. Architecture firm Barkow Leibinger supported the students in the planning and realization, accompanying the implementation of the prototype through to its completion in autumn 2024.

Main: East Side Lofts is a mixed-use building in a rapidly changing neighborhood near Frankfurt, Germany’s East Harbor (Osthafen). The original prewar building was built as a factory; however, due to the outbreak of World War I the design was never fully realized and the building was used instead as a hospital and later as worker’s housing. 1100 Architect’s design addresses two tasks: the renovation of the historic building and a contemporary addition of equal size that completes the original volume. 1100’s comprehensive investigation of the existing structure involved a collaboration with Frankfurt’s Landmarks Department, from which the firm developed its strategies to finally realize this building almost a century later.

With the completion of the transport and landscaped areas, the conversion and extension of the workshops for the scenery and costumes of the Städtische Bühnen were completed on time for the new 2014/2015 season. Owing to functional and regulatory shortcomings, the extensive workshop conversion work started as early as 2007. The operation of the stage was maintained unrestricted throughout the construction period and the various workshops were replaced by a new building in the existing complex comprising the opera house, the theatre and the “Kammerspiel” theatre.

The Western Harbour – located in the south-western not far from Frankfurt’s city centre and ten minutes to walk from the main train station - was until recently an unattractive “non-place”: a 124,000 square meter area with an elongated offshore jetty lost its importance and function as a trading centre because the logistic of transportation of goods was shifted from water to rails and streets. The storage buildings - mostly inconsequential post-war architecture - dilapidated, have been used as a warehouse for carpet dealers and carriers and a concrete mixing factory was sooting.
