The church precinct in Gerliswil, with its distinctive neo-baroque church crowning the hill, forms an idyllic oasis in Emmenbrücke. The 1970s brutalist church community center integrates seamlessly into the hillside. While its volumetrics recede in deference to the church, it retains an independent, expressive presence typical of its era. The renovation and expansion have clarified its structure, connecting the building with the height of the church. The existing base now supports a new hall extension with a striking copper roof, eloquently signifying its new role as a public institution.

The 4Viertel district, located at Seetalplatz in Emmenbrücke, expands the Viscos area and creates a distinctive gateway to the new neighborhood. It preserves the industrial charm of the area while integrating modern urban qualities through plazas and alleys between the buildings. In addition to the existing cinema building, three new constructions have been added, providing a total of 45,000 square meters of net floor space for housing, shops, offices, restaurants, and leisure facilities.

On the industrial site of the former monofilament manufacturer Viscosuisse and today’s Monosuisse AG in Emmenbrücke, a new urban district, to be known as the Viscosistadt, will be developed in the near future. While preserving the diversity of the existing buildings, the urban quality of the site will be further strengthened and developed. The first measure is the conversion of Building 745 into the new location for the Lucerne School of Art and Design. Part of the Viscosuisse legacy, this strongly expressive building shapes the character of the site. The structure has wide spans and is made up of columns, down-beams and prefabricated ribbed concrete ceiling slabs, producing generously sized, uninterrupted spaces. In order to preserve the quality of this fine example of Swiss engineering architecture and to make it usable, our intervention is as direct and restrained as possible.

The client, a small innovative project developer called Orangerock, acquired a piece of land close to the city centre for future redevelopment, planned to take place within ten years. On the site some old buildings can be found that will eventually be demolished. Until that moment the developer decided to temporary use one of the available buildings, an old rustique house, as his office.
