Our work is ultimately about people. Our houses are designed to reflect our client’s particular character, history, and story. The renovation and extension to a heritage Edwardian terrace at Ruskin Street bring this narrative full circle, as we completed this project for the child of one of our earliest residential clients from 25 years ago. This ongoing relationship with a client and their family made this project truly special for our office.

Nestled in the quiet streets of Elwood, Victoria Australia, ‘Silhouette Hytte’ House is located on a narrow 210m2 block. The site is 34.4m long by 6.1m wide and has an East facing backyard. Presented with a number of challenging constraints such as a heritage overlay, flood overlay and close proximity of neighboring trees, the project required a carefully considered design response to achieve the clients ambitious brief.

Prior to renovation, Elwood House was a tired, 100-year-old example of these in poor condition but with bones intact. The client, who valued the history and style of the building wanted to invest in its retention and restoration. Details such as tuckpointing of façade brickwork, new cobbled bluestone driveway, reinstated timber fence and formal geometric front garden designed by Lachie Anderson Landscapes has strengthened the heritage fabric of the street.

While the brief for this project included a specific aesthetic, the uniqueness of this home is extraordinary. Residing in an inner suburb of Melbourne, the sculptural form of the house has been inserted into the residential landscape, with a cantilevered upper-floor clad in aluminium slats, the day-time presence is that of a textured and patinated container over glass. At night, however, when lit from within, the upper floor becomes a lantern, while the lower floor falls away to give the impression of a single sculptural form floating in the night sky.

Located in the popular bayside suburb of Elwood, The Milton exemplifies the ongoing gentrification of the area and it’s rich literary and architectural history. Characterised by the grand array of Victorian, Edwardian and Interwar architecture, Elwood has become synonymous with the classics. Named after one of the iconic British literary figures, which define Elwood’s streets, at The Milton. Inspired by this local sentiment, we developed a bespoke brand that evoked a sense of intrigue and old world charm, yet still felt familiar.

The brief was to develop 2 existing house sites with 4 townhouses while minimising the impact on the environment. Our client Mick is a local who had lived in one of the existing houses, and wanted to make a contribution to the suburb he loves. Rather than use complex ‘active systems’ to meet the ESD brief, we took the approach that the DNA of the building needed to be based on a sustainable ideology. This was a two prong approach: the first was to engage a design and construction team who were based locally, cared about the area (a ‘think global, act local’ approach), and the second was to ensure that the building itself worked well ‘passively’ to minimise the need for air conditioning and artificial lighting - all without compromising the architecture. The outer residences have ‘traditional’ townhouse plans with living at the lower level and bedrooms upstairs.
