With the completion of the new headquarters of SachsenEnergie AG, an important element of Dresden’s skyline has been created. The architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) have designed a building complex with one thirteen-story and one eight-story tower, with a height of 51 and 32 meters respectively, which is in keeping with the urban context around the main railway station. Located to the south of the inner city, the new development is a visible landmark that fits in with the city of Dresden’s new town planning guide for high-rise buildings. The project, under the general planning of gmp, was planned, using the Building Information Modeling (BIM) method in all trades.

The House of the Cathedral refers to the former chancery house in the city center of Dresden Old Town. It is in the immediate vicinity of the tourist magnets Stallhof (Stable Yard) and Residenzschloss (former Royal Palace). In World War II the Old Town of Dresden was largely destroyed and had not been reconstructed during the period of the former GDR. In 1997, shortly after the German reunification, the building located in the now listed “cultural-historical center” had been reconstructed – as one of the first buildings.

The newly built single-family house Haus Ludwig is located in the historically grown villa district of Oberloschwitz with a view over Dresden and the Elbe. The property is located in the „Elbhänge monument statute area“ and in the area of the protected property "Weidners Sanatorium“. The clients, a couple of doctors with 2 small children, came to us with the idea of a rather untypical residential building, an irregular structure with few right angles, but which conveys a sense of security. Working very closely together, we developed a building form that met the interior requirements for living and a sense of space, while blending in with its surroundings as a coherent sculpture on the outside.

The new build is conveniently located close to the A4 to the west of Dresden. A manufacturing hall measuring 143 by 62 metres, where the dialysers are assembled under cleanroom conditions, is the main part of the project. Offices, areas for recreation and logistics, as well as a boiler house to the rear of the plot, complement the industrial estate. The plant with a gross floor area of 15,000 m² provides workspace for a total of 140 persons. The design submitted by Neugebauer + Roesch won the architecture design competition initiated by B. Braun. Among other things, the judges commended the “appropriate blend of representative appearance and functionality” in the planning practice’s proposal.

Dresden is characterised by two destructions: Gottfried Semper´s synagogue in the "Reichskristallnacht" on 9th of november 1938 and the entire historical city on 13th and 14th february 1945 by allied bombings. The destructions are historically linked. Yet the architectural consequences couldn`t be more different. On the one hand Dresden reproduces the historical monuments (like the Frauenkirche as the most emblematic reconstruction), establishing a false continuity and a problematic pretension of architectural stability. On the other hand the new synagogue represents an attempt which investigates the conflict between stability and fragility, between the permanent and the temporary, the temple and the tabernacle.
