The change in school pedagogy and the reinterpretation of teaching forms prompted the city of Dortmund to examine the location and the main building of the Reinoldi - Gesamtschule, which had been expanded in several sections but was getting on in years, for its future viability. The analysis recommended a new building and the demolition of the existing building.

Whether glass and sky, asphalt and sand, steel and trees: the merging of architecture and landscape has always been an inevitable factor in building. In particular the buildings made of glass, steel and concrete have had an immaterial connection to their natural surroundings since the 19th century. The superimposition of structures, reflections, filters and transparencies becomes an important design element and fascinates with its ambiguous representation of reality.

HPP is one of Germany‘s most successful Architectural Partnerships. More than 80 years after it was founded by Helmut Hentrich, the company is currently managed by the fourth generation of architects. Some of the practices most well-known completed projects include the Dreischeibenhaus in Düsseldorf, the refurbishment of Leipzig’s Central Station and the Düsseldorf Tonhalle. Football-related projects have been a significant part of HPP’s design portfolio since completion of the “AufSchalke” multi-purpose arena. Subsequent projects include the Volkswagen Arena in Wolfsburg, the modernisation and extension of the BayArena in Leverkusen, the Baltic Arena in Danzig (a joint project with RKW) and the extension of the Franken Stadium in Nuremberg. The Steigerwald Stadium in Erfurt is currently undergoing conversion works, to turn it into a multi-purpose arena and congress centre without interrupting operations.

In 2006, the design for the new Fire Station 1 in Dortmund was selected as the winner. The jury especially praised “good operational processes, good management of various zones, the sensitive and appropriately formed welcoming qualities and the functionally excellent connected and publicly presentable entry area.“

Over the course of several years and on many travels, the clients – a young couple with a keen interest in architecture – had formed specific ideas and mental images of what their home was to be like. Light in the form of daylight and artificial lighting played a central role in their considerations. Specifics were provided for the room plan, the exact relationship of rooms, the view, even a floor plan concept was produced – all infused with particular ideas in mind regarding the effects of daylight and artificial lighting both inside the home and in outdoor areas. The light in their vision became the fourth dimension of architecture. To help the process, the clients had compiled several hundreds of highly atmospheric photos and detailed descriptions of how day-to-day situations in their future home were to be experienced. Rather than a prestigious character, the idea was to follow the leitmotif of a modern, relaxed and unpretentious bungalow in the country. After a long and intensive search, they eventually found a property in an exposed position that met all the requirements in terms of sunlight and stunning view.
