Casa 17-JB is located in a condominium in the city of Curitiba, in southern Brazil. The project originated from a request by a client close to the team, of Italian descent, an architecture enthusiast eager to work together with the office to find the suitable land for the construction of their new residence amidst nature. The choice of the lot was defined by two decisive conditions: the presence of a native forest protected by environmental legislation and the steep topography. These restrictions directly guided the architectural proposal.

The shorter leg of the L features a single-story double-height volume dedicated to the main living spaces of the house, which are complemented by a powder room and a wine cellar located in the lower volume beneath a green roof. The longer leg comprises three levels, starting with garages in the basement, service areas on the ground floor, and bedrooms on the upper floor.
A solid white form that contrasts with its immediate surroundings. This is the principle behind the design of Casa Bosque, located on a narrow lot within a horizontal condominium of attached houses. This white canvas, being homogeneous, does not evoke the subjective mental image of a house and allows for an open perception of what is seen, offering a complete reading of the volume, without areas of concentration or elements that “pull” the eye. As artist Robert Ryman states, “white is merely a way to expose other elements, allowing other things to become visible.” By choosing this volume, the design begins with a unified concept where the design itself defines the flows and layouts contained within this rigid geometry.

Space and time, in the physical conception, are interdependent and inseparable forces. In architecture, this relationship is also symbiotic, as one cannot speak of architectural space without considering the various ways of perceiving and dealing with time. The design of Casa João e Maria starts from this premise, as the place of the residence, designed for a couple, is the same one where the owner was born and spent childhood with her parents, João and Maria. Therefore, the project sought to blend past and present, viewing time not as linear, but as a tangle of memories, moments and points of perception. This non-linearity is reflected in the space, appropriating the idea of multiple pathways by placing the circulation core in the center of the site, amidst the main courtyard of the house.

The client's request to create a residence for a small family in the context of large-scale properties presented a unique design challenge. This need for scale and volume in the immediate surroundings, together with the steep slope of the land, the geographical orientation, and the presence of a large forest at the back of the plot led to the design and implementation strategy: an elevated basic prism synthesized the solution to meet all the initial premises. The topography of the plot, with its steep slope, offered a unique opportunity to integrate the house into the natural landscape, taking advantage of the views and the edge of the forest that demarcates it to create privacy and a connection with nature. This careful balance between scale, topography, and climate would be essential to create a space that not only meets the needs of the family but also enriches the fabric of the condominium and its relationship with the environment.

With the growth in sales, the space of just one container became too small for Garimpê, a store curated with children's products that stimulate children's development and creativity. In addition to expanding the exhibition area, it was also necessary to accommodate the administrative sector. Located on a corner lot in Curitiba, the store's expansion has two implementation strategies: the enrichment of customers' relationship with the natural landscape of the land and the creation of an exhibition showcase for the city, through the expansion of the facade to the street main. From there, two new containers were connected to the pre-existing container, thus maintaining the store's external constructive identity.

A commercial space in the Batel neighborhood, in Curitiba-PR. Result of a retrofit in which the original structures of the building were maintained, the project was premised on active facades, thus creating a transparency between interior and exterior on the ground floor, in order to allow multiple possible accesses. The site has a peculiar situation on an urban scale. The lot's morphology is similar to an acute triangle and, when considering the requirements of the legislation, such as the setbacks of the building alignment, there was not enough usable area left for the implantation of the building, or for the construction of a good area in the basement of garages, for example. As a result, in the first conversations with the clients, the hypothesis arose to renovate the existing building on the lot, carried out in the 90s. A fundamental aspect of the context is the presence of the small square next to the corner. It suggests visual integration and pedestrian flows, directly connected with the interior of the store.

We were thrilled to receive an invitation from the esteemed Galeria Simões de Assis to undertake a project for a new space in Curitiba using an existing property. From a sustainability standpoint, renovation is the most logical route regarding resource utilization and focus on solutions. We believe that reimagining spaces will continue to be an increasingly important exercise for cities.
