The completion of the Court Theatre marks the long-awaited return of the theater to Ōtautahi Christchurch's city center, marking a major milestone in the city's post-earthquake regeneration and the creation of a vibrant new arts precinct. Designed through an international collaboration between London-based Haworth Tompkins and New Zealand's Athfield Architects, and constructed by Hawkins, the new facility represents a significant investment in the future of performing arts in Aotearoa New Zealand. Following the devastating 2011 Christchurch earthquake, The Court Theatre, New Zealand's largest professional theater company, was forced to vacate its historic home in the Arts Centre and operate from a temporary venue in Addington. In 2020, Christchurch City Council partnered with The Court Theatre to develop a new, purpose-built facility in the city centre. The result is a world-class, sustainable theater complex that anchors the revitalized cultural core of Ōtautahi Christchurch.

The anchor project for the future Rolleston Town Centre, Te Ara Ātea acts as a beacon, not only in location but for the diverse and growing community it serves. The project has a strong community focus and challenges the typical preconceptions of a ‘library’, in keeping with its gifted name which means ‘unobstructed trail to the world and beyond.’

The Fendalton Road project explores the love and memory a retired couple have of a home and site they have occupied for over thirty years. A two-level 1910 home was destroyed in the devastating 2011 Christchurch earthquake and subsequently demolished. A new home was required within the footprint of the original. An existing formal garden adorned the level site and was to remain untouched for the new home. The owners’ established connections to the site and space were at the forefront of this project.

Riverside House is an elegant and sculptural family haven located on a highly constrained site bounded by two major arterial routes in a desirable corner of Hagley Park. The challenge was to make the most of the site and to fit a large family home into a tight building envelope constrained by river setbacks and a footprint afforded by an original house that occupied the land. Embracing the riverside setting while retaining privacy was a primary concern of the client and project brief.

With the generosity of volume prioritised over the additional floor area, only 20 m2 was added in the process. A practical approach was taken to sustainability, working within the framework of the existing building the thermal mass and structure of existing concrete was utilised in conjunction with new elements, including warm-roof construction, thermally broken aluminum joinery, natural and sustainably sourced material selections, solar hot water and integrated heat recovery system.

Surrounded by wild gardens and native bush, the Three Trees Learning Centre in Rolleston, Christchurch utilises sustainable design to provide children with an environment that fosters learning and growth through a natural discovery approach. A core part of the client’s pedagogy is that the building acts as the child’s third teacher, or an environmental steward. The centre has been designed to reflect this pedagogy, creating a seamless transition between the child’s built environment and the outdoors.

Designed to the landscape and surrounding environment, the building’s form stands honestly with purpose. MC Architecture Studio was fully aware of the surrounding environments impact on the building and vice versa. The Wall House has been formed to address, and exist alongside, its exterior world. Its fragmented northern façade splits open for maximum sun contact, while protecting a sheltered outdoor living area from the prevailing winds. The shape creates two alternative wings, one reaching out to the North Eastern corner of the site, while the other leans to the North West directing out towards the view.

The design of the five-storey, 9,500-square-metre library in Christchurch’s historic Cathedral Square supports the city’s desire for a public space that strengthens the community, advances literacy and lifetime learning, celebrates diversity of culture and heritage, draws people back to the city centre, and fosters innovation. Early in the design process, the architects collaborated withMatapopore Charitable Trust, an organization whose objective is to ensure the values, aspirations and narratives of the local Ngāi Tūāhuriri people are realised throughout the recovery of Christchurch. Their influence on the design of the building is substantial—from building materials to physical orientation, there is a rich tapestry of ancestry, traditional knowledge, and culture woven throughout Tūranga.
