Havenwood House began with a family gift: a block of land in a quiet Brighton cul-de-sac. What followed tested the project at every turn—planning disputes, a drawn-out VCAT process, the collapse of the original builder, and ultimately a complete rethink of the design. From these challenges emerged a light-filled home that reconsiders the suburban backyard, placing nature, community, and long-term living at the forefront of everyday life.

Esplanade Brighton elevates medium-density coastal housing in Melbourne through thoughtful design and contextual sensitivity. Delivered in two stages, the project balances bold contemporary architecture with a deep respect for the site's unique Bayside location and surrounding urban fabric. The project replaces a vacant brownfield site with a collection of 24 townhouses and 11 apartments across 4 distinct buildings, nestled amongst an extensively planted native garden.

The Light Scoop House employs a courtyard house typology planning approach in response to its elongated site. A barcode plan of alternating rooms and landscaped courtyards expands the impression of space within a narrow plan, bringing natural light and garden views into every room. Formally, the house is composed of two double brick walls on the side boundaries, which capture the roof elements between. Three taller pavilion roofs (housing the habitable rooms) employ a consistent taper at each leading edge, creating an aperture to connect with the sky.

Situated on an exposed corner site, privacy from the street was central to the brief. Given the desire for privacy and the client’s love of concrete, they were keen to reduce the number of windows, leaving the public facade as uninterrupted as possible.
