The elementary school provides an ideal educational facility for modern pedagogic approaches. It is an uncompromising example of cluster design offering a flexible and nurturing learning environment. In an elegant, one-story wooden structure, four identical teaching clusters are situated around a top-lighted lounge with a raised roof. The flat building blends harmoniously into the environment of single-family houses. The schoolyard in front of the auditorium is connected to the Unterdorf path network. Local residents can use parts of the outdoor areas and sports facilities.

After having worked in an old workshop for fifteen years in Dornbirn, I overcame my inner resistance and built a studio for myself and my staff. On more than one occasion during my walks through Bregenz, I noticed near the train station a small derelict building plot with a transformer station that was no longer in operation. With a bit of luck, we were able to purchase the small plot inside the city center, perhaps also because it wasn't particularly appealing to investors due to the small size and because underground parking was not an option.

The new Schendlingen school in Bregenz (Austria) is a very ambitious project on the part of the clients and educators. On the one hand, an innovative school is intended to provide a clear impetus and enhance the socially problematic catchment area (social focus). On the other hand, the building was designed as a “Gemeinsame Schule” (common school) with a broad age spectrum (for pupils aged 6 to 14 years) as well as a very open and flexible spatial structure.

This was once the site of the Montfort, a hotel built in Bregenz in 1877 during the Gründerzeit era. In 1921, architect Willibald Braun erected an adjoining and historicizing building with a neo-classicist façade for the Provincial Parliament of Vorarlberg. The hotel, the “Graues Haus” (grey house), served as an administration building to the Provincial Government. Between 1981 and 1984, after the construction of the new parliament, it was replaced by a postmodernist office and commercial building with an inclined roof. The building is linked to the city centre via a diagonal passage. Extensive refurbishments, to be completed by 2008, will once again redefine this part of the city.

While a concrete core ties the house to the hill and contains all service rooms, a more open wooden structure was chosen for the living area and bedrooms. The form of the home allows for the focal point of all the interior spaces to be the forests below.

For over ten years the municipality of Krumbach pursued a very committed construction program, which essentially concerned the structural development of the village center. The rectory is seen as a preliminary ‘milestone’ in this process. In its function as a cultural and multipurpose building, the rectory plays an important role in Krumbach’s public life, reinforced by its spatial presence in the in the village square. Inside the building, a parish hall (small village hall), the parish office with rectory as well as a library and the rehearsal room for the music club and choir. The diverse range of uses provides additional vitalization and attractiveness for Krumbach’s village center.
