The new headquarters of the service providers Markas in Bolzano was integrally designed with BIM by ATP on the basis of its winning scheme from a realization competition of 2016. The tower, which plays an important role in the cityscape, is characterized by a well-proportioned volume which, unusually, is capable of growing downwards. “Our idea was to make use of both the maximum permitted height of 40 meters and the overall potential volume in our design in such a way that the building contains reserve volume for further expansion”, explains Paul Ohnmacht, Head of Design at ATP Innsbruck. “If we had merely designed a conventional tower of this height with the current permitted volume then this tower would have been too slender and the floor plans would have been uneconomic.”

The project is located within the headquarter of Eurac Research Center on Druso Avenue in Bozen, known as "ex-GIL". The structure was designed by architects Mansutti and Miozzo, and was constructed in the years 1934 to 1936 in order to accommodate youth females enrolled in GIL (Gioventù Italiana del Littorio). Following the war, the building, renamed "Ex-GIL", was used for different purposes, from supermarket to pornographic cinema, and was abandoned over time to a slow degradation. In 1995 an international architectural competition for the transformation of the ensemble into the new headquarters for Eurac Research was announced. The jury decided unanimously for the design of Graz-based architect Klaus Kada, who integrated the building which is under the protection of cultural assets with modern rational and transparent glass intersections.

The idea of notaltering the ancient architectural context of the Capuchin friars convent -protected by the national heritageassociation- but the need for new spaces and classrooms, gave the architect the opportunity to create a“subterranean school appendix”: four levels excavated 17 meters underground on which 9 classrooms, 6workshops , a winter garden and a utility room are distributed.
