The Samuel Paty School in Béziers is centered around a strong paradigm that combines massiveness and porosity. Its urban positioning is based on the highlighting of a clean and longitudinal volume that adapts to the site's topography. In the heart of the Devèze district, the primary school is developed only on a single ground floor, to offer a human-level building scale. The roof is therefore a real facade in its own right, in the sense that it is as visible as the elevations. The sanded concrete materiality then makes it possible to unify these different planes into a whole, in which the composition blends with its volume.

Context. The deep-rooted origins of the Domaine de Bayssan still remain a mystery, but its toponymy plunges us into the Gallo-Roman period which contributed strongly to the city of Béziers identity, its economic expansion, and its emergence in history.

The nine locks of Fonséranes, designed in the 17th century by Pierre-Paul Riquet, are listed as historical monuments and certified as world heritage by the Unesco. Sobriety and discretion have prevailed to re-think the layouts made in the close vicinity of the locks: a global re-entitlement of the architecture and the landscape has allowed a staging of the monument and a re-organization of the visit paths, thus creating a coherence between site and landscape.

To provide the urban monumentality required of a judicial institution and the serenity necessary to handle delicate cases that affect people's lives, the new Béziers Court is seen as stacks of three layers of rock. At each level, steps and patios locate between these quarry blocks. The stepped masses encourage daylight to enter, creating internal landscapes, like an oasis.

The aim of this project was to transform an ancient Roman church into a cultural place devolved to exposures, concert of classical music, plays… A long use of the building as a farm damaged it. To reveal it original style, façades has been cleaned and highlighted. Inside, the church miraculously preserved, has been upgraded to field the accessibility and safety norms and to enhance acoustic and global comfort. Artist’s locker rooms and ticket office are outside the existing buiding in an extensioncladded with gabions and corten steel and is part of the new landscape.
