While thinking of a home for the future we looked back on what we have lost. Homes of tomorrow need to respond to an urgent need for sustainability and values enhanced by the technology available. Architecture needs to regain the idea of presence, of being part of a place and time. It has always been related to its context, the available resources, and local construction method, all of this should continue to be an essential part of it even though nowadays material can travel around the globe. Using local resources and construction methods the project gains a sense of place and a true relation to its natural and artificial surroundings.

The client challenged the design team to create a modern, sustainable renovation of an aging existing complex of office buildings in Bentonville, Arkansas. The complex was a mixture of metal building and masonry structures in a significantly valuable location right on the Razorback Regional Greenway, a shared-use path running 36 miles through Northwest Arkansas. Cluttered and unorganized facades dominated the existing street presence of the site, however, the simple brick façade of Building One to the west provided a classic stock and backdrop for future architectural interventions. This skillful renovation and addition has extended the life of the Greenway Offices complex and created a healthy place to work.

The education and practice of the Landscape Architect are multidisciplinary by nature… we are designers, but at times we must act as facilitators, advocates, ecologists, economists, scientists, engineers… Through a couple of my projects, I will narrate my professional journey, which has helped me change my perception of our work as multidisciplinary designers, and has also allowed me to witness how our communities have changed over the last few decades, learning to appreciate their environment in a more comprehensive way,
