Manna Hotel / K-Studio

Originally built in the late 1920s, the Manna Sanatorium received patients with tuberculosis who hoped to heal from the benefits of living within the arcadic woods for almost a decade. Designed by Swiss architects, it stirred away from the neoclassical current of the moment in the area. Despite the idyllic location, the introduction of penicillin in 1938 made sanatoriums obsolete, forcing the abandonment of Manna at the mercy of looting, with its parts being repurposed in nearby constructions.

Located in the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte (Brazil), “O Ateliê de Cerâmica” is a design studio focused on the production of ceramic objects and the preservation of traditional craftsman’s methods. Founded in 2002, it went through refurbishment and expansion in 2014 and a later intervention in 2017.

The Gold Line Bridge is a 584-linear-foot bridge stretching diagonally across the Eastbound I-210 Freeway in Arcadia, California. The $18.6 million dual track bridge is the first element of the 11.5-mile Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension (Foothill Extension) light rail project from Pasadena to Azusa to be completed, providing connection between the existing Sierra Madre Villa Station in the city of Pasadena and the future Arcadia Station.

This new museum houses a permanent collection as well as a continually rotating exhibit depicting the history of this area of Los Angeles County. The program includes a multi-purpose room and archival area, a curatorial office, and both interior and exterior exhibit spaces. Clerestory windows and focused views provide natural light to the galleries. Views of the nearby San Gabriel Mountains are incorporated into the exhibit as the historical is juxtaposed with the present. Relationships to the site and existing community center west of the museum are created through geometric and material references to the context.
