A vibrant new destination has emerged in the heart of Antiparos, where retail and hospitality converge in a single, immersive space, set within the historic former folklore museum of Antiparos. A space of objects, scent, nourishment, and gathering, this innovative project - a shop, cafe and bar - was brought to life through a unique collaboration between Studio Andrew Trotter and its long term client and friend Eva Papadaki, blending refined design with relaxed island living.

Perched on the hills surrounding Antiparos Islands' caves, this seasonal residence boasts expansive views of the Cycladic archipelago from the island of Tinos as far south as Sikinos. The sloping property is dotted with three building clusters – a white house and two subterranean slits on the mountainside – giving the project the name 'Antiparos Village.' Between these volumes, a sensitive landscaping of trees and shrubbery reveals organic pathways through a terraced garden, which connect the distinct buildings into an intimate, yet quietly private, whole.

The main idea of the project was based in two elements: the existing walls, at different levels, and the platforms created by those walls. The elevations of the two house levels are broken lines that were created as continuation of the existing site walls. The topography helps to dissimulate the house.

APS house is located at the south of Antiparos island, Cyclades, Greece, facing a protected archaeological island, Despotikon and its ancient Apollo sanctuary. The topography is steep, creating a natural protection from the north winds, while still catching the view to the sunset. During the ‘70s, a poor urban plan was juxtaposed on the area, thus transforming it in a rare case study of Cycladic post-rural suburbia.

The Aegean islands are known for their great and dramatic beauty. Significantly, this beauty is the result of the interaction of natural and human agents, both in its creation and in its perception and representation: the white chapel on top of a hill, the traditional village overlooking the sunset, the golden wheat-fields overlooking the sea. These elements were not constructed with any attempts or notion of the picturesque; however, they are the result of self-organizing systems of structures and processes developed over millennia.
