A Place of Memory and Reconciliation Created by Light
In the tranquil village of Mangyeong, located three hours south of Seoul, a deeply meaningful commemorative space has been established. This memorial honors Pastor Kim Jong-han and the fifteen members of the Mangyeong Church who were martyred during the Korean War in 1950. The Mangyeong Church Martyrs Memorial is designed, not as a conventional monument, but as a powerful symbol of remembrance, renewal, and hope for a rural community grappling with depopulation and the erosion of its cultural identity.

The Hamidur Rahman Memorial Complex is located along the Buringanga River in Fatullah. The sprawling grounds are screened from the street by a high wall. The former Hamid family home was built in the 1960s at the site's western end, directly on the riverbank. In the years that followed, leading to the country's independence, it was a secret meeting place and served as a hideout for Awami League politicians who could reach the house unseen by boat. After 1971, a cold storage facility was built on the property for commercial purposes, and nine years later, a multi-story textile factory was built. The family home remained unused with all these developments, which led to its dilapidation.

The road was built in the 1920s by the village of Sulz so that in winter, wood could be transported down to the valley by horses and hand-drawn sleds. After 1960 was impassable for a long time due to damage, the old loggers’ road is today intact again and provides access to several sections of the scenic recreation area on the Masella ridge.

To implement a new funeral culture, Haeahn Architecture planned Hwaseong Hambaeksan Memorial Park as a place of light and nature to console the deceased’s family and mourners, commemorating the memory of the deceased as the park completes the scenic beauty of the area in harmony with Mount Hambaek. Hwaseong Hambaeksan Memorial Park is a user-oriented funerary cultural complex. As the place harmoniously embraces the surrounding nature and softly touches the sky, we applied the design concept “the Forest painted with the Sky”, Haeahn Architecture allocated all facilities along the one-stop circular route in consideration of the ceremonial procedure, from funeral services to cremation to enshrinement.

This minimalist space conveys the spirit of modernity and perpetuates the memory of the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred who sacrificed their lives during the Revolution of Dignity. In the competition, the task was to choose a neglected site in the center - the historical part of Lviv, which is part of the UNESCO zone. This is a complex terrain with large level variations (more than 10 meters). After analyzing the relief, we tried to inscribe the space in the historically formed environment, thus dividing it into different level zones.

Before get to the memorial hall, there is a mountain road composed of winding paths and steps. The entrance plaza is divided by an oblique path and the sharp patterns, giving the plaza a heavy commemorative atmosphere. After stepping on ten steps, the surrounding granite exterior walls gradually form a strong mass turning. The deep concave entrance and undulating stone changes affect the mood of visitors constantly. Therefore, tourists will enter the hall from here with their hesitation and expectation.

Around a century ago, the abrupt end of the life of a twenty-year-old young worker in a Japanese-owned cotton mill ignited the outburst of the May Thirtieth Movement. His name was Gu Zhenghong. Hundred years later, on No.300 Aomen Road, Putuo District, Shanghai, the very site where the martyr laid to rest, the expansion work of Gu Zhenghong Memorial Hall was completed right before the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC) to present a brand-new look in front of the public.

Located on the crest of a wooded rise, framing a view towards the meadow below, the visitor center for Better Place Forests in Point Arena, California marks the threshold of the visitors’ journey into the forest’s memorial groves. Better Places Forests offers a sustainable alternative to cemeteries. Within these protected forests, families choose trees to mark the place where they’ll spread their loved ones’ ashes over generations. The concept has simple poetry—merging ritual, memorial, and forest conservation—yet its realization involved a large team of design and technical specialists, led by Fletcher Studio, landscape architects. Located on a 40-acre stretch of the Mendocino Coast, Better Place Forests’ Point Arena location establishes a framework for future sites, each with its own unique qualities.

The Memorial Hall is dedicated to the deeds of the martyrs who rest in the adjacent cemetery in the city of Chishui, in Guizhou province. The cemetery complex is organized around a main west-east axis; the oblique cut in the southern part of the new building and its main entrance staircase’s orientation highlight this axis, paying respect to the old cemetery complex. Added in 2012, the Memorial Hall is located on the northern side of the main cemetery axis, on a Danxia stone hillside with an elevation difference of about 10 meters. Danxia is the local red stone, typical of the Chishui area, whose color is given by an accumulation of reddish sandstone.

The new Remembrance Centre embodies purity of form, employing both modern and classical architectural precedents. The building engages materially with its environment, chiming with the existing structures that define the NMA and harnessing a soft material concept of larch timber and natural stone. This provides a calm and rational architectural language that compliments the NMA as a place of reflection and memorial.
