With the opening match of the Chinese FA Super Cup, the new Football Stadium in Kunshan was officially inaugurated on February 7. More than 30,000 fans gathered for the local derby between Shanghai Shenhua and Shanghai Port. In a thrilling finale, Shanghai Shenhua secured victory with two goals in the last three minutes, successfully defending their Super Cup title — bringing the first major soccer event in the new arena to a fitting conclusion. The stadium, named Kunshan Olympic Sports Center, was designed by the architects von Gerkan, Marg, and Partners (gmp) in collaboration with the Architectural Design and Research Institute of Tongji University. With a capacity of 45,000 seats, the arena meets FIFA Category 1 standards as a very large professional football venue, making it suitable for major international competitions.

The new football stadium is located in the Northern part of the city of Lausanne, at the point where the city's dense urban fabric gives way to the more open countryside. The sports infrastructure at the new "Centre Sportif de la Tuilière" comprises nine football pitches, arranged in two rows, in addition to an athletics facility with a training centre. The stadium picks up on the idea of the slightly offset rectangular pitches, taking it even further. Positioned at a slight angle to the training pitches, the stadium square is orchestrated to form the city-side entry point to the sports campus.

The facade is made as an image of a solemn salute, symbolizing the dedication of military honors to the defenders of the Motherland. It is a steel shell of the rods forming a diamond-shaped structure, from the tops of the lower-level diamonds directed upward divergent rods of smaller cross-section, their crossing at the upper levels creates a pattern of rockets taking off salute.

It is a rural location, in the town of Cerponzóns, in a raised zone over the valley of the rivers Lérez and Rons, with good access from the national road and close to the city. The intervention aims to create a new artificial grass football field over the existing field and improve and increase the facilities with new buildings for the changing rooms, toilets, canteen, infirmary and a couple of warehouses, as well as a new lighting system for the football field.

The “Maracaná” is a football stadium built during the years 2013-2014 in the popular El Chorrillo neighborhood in Panama City, Panama. The structure replaced an old sports field, baptized by the locals with the name of the legendary Rio de Janeiro stadium. The new building has capacity for five thousand spectators, and is the end point of a recent phase of the linear park that winds along the city’s coastline. El Chorrillo has a longstanding football tradition, and currently has two professional teams in the first division league. The construction of the stadium was part of an effort to provide this dense, low-income neighborhood with more public space and with attractions of metropolitan appeal, in order to better integrate it to the rest of the city. The building is used by a variety of professional and amateur leagues.

The new $72 million Yulman Stadium nests itself into the heart of the Tulane’s athletics precinct. It provides a backdrop to a new athletics quadrangle while connecting to the existing Hertz and Wilson Centers. Construction began in early 2013 and was completed in early 2015. The new stadium marks the first time in 40 years that football is being played on Tulane’s campus. It has become a catalyst for renewed interest in the Tulane football program, successfully bringing back a generation of lost fans.

Its purity and geometrical clarity inspires a sense of monumentality and gracefulness. One might be tempted to draw a comparison with a classical temple, but unlike the elevated plinth of a temple, the grand stairs of the stadium blur the boundaries between inside and outside. Countless columns standing on the stairs accompany the visitors on their way in and out of the stadium. The fusion of stairs and columns forms a gesture of openness and accessibility.

Tero Auvinen, UEFA consultant, named our new Stadium after Robin Hood referring to it’s amazing location in the middle of the forest. Is it really possible to set a modern football stadium in the heart of the woods? How can such a monumental building adapt to the human scale and provide a people-friendly environment? What is the design concept by which the stadium is able to refl ect the local traditions, national prides and values to create an unforgettable, unique atmosphere and sense of space? How to build a sport venue time- and cost-effectively with high quality and to operate it in a sustainable manner? The Stadium of Nagyerdo designed by the Hungarian architect, Peter Bordas, gives an interesting response to these questions.

The arena’s design is unique. Its façade and roof are integrated and made up of 20 petal-shaped modules, designed to be higher on one of the stadium's sides, giving the impression that the sand dunes – which are common in the region – are moving. The design also enables more ventilation and light to come into the stadium.

The winning proposal, designed by GMT Mysłowice, will have a capacity for 12,000 seats and, although described as not being "the most impressive [design] overall," has been selected for its simple, clean form and "value for money." With ruch meaning 'movement' or 'motion' in Polish, the concept for the design has hinged around "giving passers-by a different perspective from every possible angle as they move along the stadium."
