EPDM Roofing Membrane at ICEHOTEL | Elevate EMEA

Elevate has 40 years of experience in roofing solutions that enhance building performance and protect communities. Located in Jukkasjärvi, northern Sweden, the ICEHOTEL draws visitors each winter with its proximity to the Arctic Circle and its snow-covered landscape. To protect the building against the region's harsh climate, the project uses Elevate's RubberGard EPDM™ roofing membrane, providing durable waterproofing.

Shortly after the hotel opened in 1989, persistent roof leaks began affecting the main suites. An assessment revealed significant damage caused by the harsh climate, an inadequate roofing system, and an improperly installed green roof, which further contributed to water infiltration. Working with Swedish contractor Caneco, Elevate evaluated the existing conditions and developed a new waterproofing strategy using a 1.5 mm-thick RubberGard EPDM™ membrane.

Elevate's roofing membrane was selected for its flexibility, durability, and ability to perform under demanding climatic conditions, including heavy snowfall and temperatures as low as −45°C.

Approximately 3,300 m² of membrane were installed across the roof, enabling the addition of a new green roof system. The membrane was mechanically fastened and fully adhered to the substrate to accommodate the project's climatic requirements. The new roofing system provides a durable waterproofing solution, helping protect the building from future water infiltration while supporting the long-term performance of the green roof.
