Kalwall manufactures translucent insulated panel systems that deliver diffuse daylight while optimizing thermal performance. Kalwall® translucent panels from Kalwall were used in the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Architecture expansion, located in Lincoln, Nebraska, USA.
The project expands and renovates the College of Architecture at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, creating the first major addition to the facility in nearly four decades. Designed by NADAAA with HDR Inc. as architect of record, the four-story north addition introduces flexible studios, critique spaces, and collaborative learning areas. The design connects new and historic structures while expressing material clarity through mass timber construction and a luminous façade that activates the campus edge.

Kalwall® panels define the north elevation, filtering daylight deep into studio spaces while reducing glare and solar heat gain. The translucent system creates evenly lit interiors suited for design work, while maintaining energy efficiency and occupant comfort. Integrated with selective vision glazing, the façade balances openness and performance, reinforcing the building’s educational mission through a light-filled, high-performance envelope.
Translucent panels specifications:
- Panel: 2.75˝ | 70 mm
- Grid core: verti-kal
- Exterior FRP: rose
- Interior FRP: white
- System finish: custom
- U-Value: .10 TB
- Solar Heat Gain Coefficient: .10
- Visible Light Transmission: 4%
Engineered as a factory-assembled composite system, Kalwall® panels combine fiberglass-reinforced faces with a proprietary grid core to achieve high insulation values, structural stability, and impact resistance. The lightweight units allow for large spans and rapid installation, supporting tight construction schedules. Their diffuse light transmission minimizes harsh shadows and eliminates the need for additional shading devices, contributing to long-term operational savings and consistent interior quality across studio environments.
