Sto is a global manufacturer of facade systems and external wall insulation solutions for new construction and renovation projects. StoTherm Mineral facade insulation systems, StoVentec C ventilated rainscreen cladding, and StoBrick Rau 2079 & 2083 clay brick slips, were applied in the inner-city densification project on Karlstraße, Ludwigsburg, Germany.
This new-build ensemble revitalized a brownfield site in downtown Ludwigsburg, transforming an underused parking lot and backyard into a high-quality mixed-use space. Designed by Steimle Architekten and Bopp Herrmann Architekten, the project includes three polygonal buildings atop a shared plinth, integrating residential and office spaces while creating dynamic public and private zones. The design references the surrounding Wilhelminian-style architecture through careful facade materiality and window alignment.

Sto products were used to achieve a visually cohesive, thermally efficient, and durable facade. The plinth features StoSignature Fine 20 felted and sanded render, while the upper sections are clad with irregular clay brick slips, creating a unique yet harmonious surface. Angled prefabricated reveals and sloping facade elements allow daylight penetration, maintain privacy, and continue the facade seamlessly into the roof. The combination of insulation, brick slips, and ventilated rainscreen ensures high energy performance, KfW55 compliance, and long-term resilience.
