More about this product

Glazing Vision is a manufacturer of architectural glass skylights engineered to enhance spaces through natural light and minimalist design. A bespoke Multi-Part Flushglaze Skylight from Glazing Vision was used in the refurbishment of Matfen Hall, a historic country hotel, spa, and golf course, located in Northumberland, United Kingdom.

Bespoke Rooflight in Historic Hotel

The Matfen Hall project involved an extensive renovation of a Grade II listed property with the aim of enhancing guest experience while preserving the building’s historic character. Central to the redesign was the transformation of two previously underused internal courtyards, positioned between the main hall and surrounding guest areas. These spaces were reimagined as vibrant social hubs that would improve circulation and create visually connected dining and lounge areas within the hotel.

Designed by Doonan Architects, the architectural approach balanced contemporary interventions with respect for the estate’s heritage fabric. Introducing large glazed roof structures over the courtyards was a key design move, allowing daylight to penetrate deep into the building while maintaining strong visual links to surrounding historic elements. The challenge lay in delivering a rooflight solution that could span large areas, remain visually minimal, and integrate seamlessly with both traditional masonry and modern structural systems.

Bespoke Rooflight in Historic Hotel

In the lower courtyard, the Multi-Part Flushglaze Skylight from Glazing Vision was engineered to create the appearance of a continuous glass roof. The system minimizes visible framing, ensuring uninterrupted views upward and preserving sightlines toward the adjacent Great Hall’s stained-glass window. This approach enhances the sense of openness while allowing the historic architectural features to remain visually dominant.

In the upper courtyard, the skylight system was carefully coordinated with a contemporary glulam structure, requiring precise alignment and detailing. The flush glass design delivers a clean, modern finish that complements the new structure while maintaining consistency across both courtyard spaces. Together, the custom skylight installations flood the interiors with natural light, unify the courtyards visually, and create refined communal environments that support the hotel’s modern hospitality functions.
