The Altstadt-Hafen car park was designed to harmonize with the harbor peninsula’s architectural context, linking the brick Gothic heritage of Wismar’s old town with historic warehouse buildings and newly constructed brick structures. Situated within a UNESCO World Heritage city center, the project needed to meet high design standards while accommodating the functional requirements of a contemporary parking structure. Challenging ground conditions near the harbor basin required a complex pile foundation system. The completed five-level building provides 211 parking spaces, each offering a generous width of at least 2.60 meters. The structure’s rounded exterior edges distinguish it from the surrounding cubic brick architecture while helping it integrate visually into the historic urban fabric.
The facade is composed of sea-air-resistant, environmentally friendly, color-enamelled LINIT® EcoGlass profiles in varying shades of red that echo the reddish-brown tones of the surrounding brick architecture. These profiled glass elements alternate with translucent LINIT® panels, allowing natural light to penetrate the parking decks and brighten the interior. The durable, high load-bearing glass system supports demanding exterior conditions while providing a refined architectural finish. The LINIT® EcoGlass P 15/60/7 configuration can be custom-made with different thicknesses, web widths, and flange heights, enabling the design to meet both structural and aesthetic objectives in this sensitive historic setting.
