VELUX Commercial delivers daylight and ventilation solutions for buildings of every scale and purpose. VELUX's skylights were used in Danske Bank's new headquarters, located in Copenhagen.
The project
Optimizing well-being through daylight, Denmark’s largest office building sets a new standard for modern workspaces. The new Danske Bank headquarters, spanning 73,000 square meters across two atrium buildings, accommodates more than 6,000 people daily on a historic post office site in central Copenhagen.
The project delivers a sustainable, light-filled environment that fosters transparency and inspiration. A landmark of contemporary Danish architecture, the building redefines the connection between workspace, urban setting, and natural light.
A striking façade of red brick and expansive glass defines the new headquarters, blending seamlessly with Copenhagen’s architectural tradition. The interplay of materials creates openness, flooding interior spaces with natural light. Transparent walls and flexible work areas foster communication and collaboration, while quiet zones support focused work. At the heart of the building, a 141-foot atrium rises through ten stories, anchoring the design with a vibrant central hub.
Sustainability
Sustainable design shapes the headquarters, integrating energy-efficient solutions like geothermal heating and cooling to minimize environmental impact. Certified LEED Gold v4 for “BD+C: New Construction and Major Renovation,” the building reflects a strong commitment to responsible construction and performance.
VELUX Modular Skylights
Extensive use of natural light defines the architecture, enhancing both aesthetics and workplace well-being. Studies show that daylight improves cognitive function, alertness, and mood in office environments—qualities essential for high-performance workplaces (source: Healthy Buildings Barometer 2024).
A key feature of the design is the installation of 862 VELUX Modular Skylights. Close collaboration between the contractor and VELUX Commercial led to bespoke solutions, integrating seamlessly with the roof’s complex geometrical layout. Early design involvement enabled a shift from originally planned dome rooflights to a large-scale glass roof system, maximizing daylight intake while maintaining thermal comfort.
High-performance glazing materials ensure optimal light transmission and energy efficiency, reducing the need for artificial lighting. The installation demanded expert precision to achieve a watertight seal at significant heights, demonstrating advanced construction expertise.
By prioritizing daylight and thoughtful design, the new headquarters delivers a sustainable, inspiring environment that sets a new benchmark for modern office buildings.
