ALPHATON® is a rear-ventilated ceramic tile produced and patented by MOEDING, a German company dedicated to the development of ceramic facade systems. ALPHATON® tiles are modular pieces that can create patterned textures on facades with insulation benefits, which can also be customized for project-specific requirements. Similarly, the BAGUETTE clay tiles by MOEDING, which are tubular bricks for composed facades, can be highly customized. The facade of the new Laboratory building in the Linz Medcampus is composed of stripes of ALPHATON® tiles and windows, which are partially covered with BAGUETTE tiles as sunscreens.
The Medcampus is a complex in Linz, made of four rebuilt sections, each with its use and distinctive materials. The project combines teaching and research rooms with offices, a library, a café, a supermarket, and other services for its 1800 students and 250 professors and staff.
The volume’s four structures are displayed around a central square. Their main four functions are lecture halls, laboratories, offices, and library services. This program separation allows a distinctive approach to the design and infrastructure necessary for each unit. The Medcampus becomes a single environment on the ground level, on which all buildings share public functions connected to the square, where all users of the four wings can interact with each other.

10 colors were selected for the palette of the four structures, incorporated both to their facades and to their interior design. The color blue of the office building is represented in the tones of its steel facade; ocher is used on the concrete building and yellow on the wooden building. The laboratory building, with red tones on the facade and on the red rubber floors, doors, and paneling of the laboratories, uses MOEDING products on the facade: it has four different shades of red in their unique pattern and movable MOEDING BAGUETTES in front of the windows, for daylight control.
The ceramic slats and the ceramic facade of ALPHATON® pieces share the same warm tones, which unify them on the surface of the facade. The ALPHATON® ceramic tiles were customized in two sizes by MOEDING: 170805-A of 350X30 mm and 170805-B, of 350X46 mm.

BAGUETTES are long-format, hollow ceramic elements fastened using special holders. In the case of specific requirements (fall protection), they can be threaded onto an aluminum tube and attached to the structure using object-related holders. The systems developed for the BAGUETTE are based on the existing systems for the other MOEDING products ALPHATON® and LONGOTON® and use similar components.
The installation system depends on its intended use and the local context of the building. Fastening of the aluminum structure can be done in three different ways: installation with rearward attachment, lateral attachment using screw traps, or using a rapid system.
