Opening in 1890, the historic Carnegie Library was one of the first free public libraries in the USA. The library closed in 2006 after lightning struck the clock tower and caused a three-ton piece of granite to crash through the roof. In 2018, KoningEizenberg Architecture (KEA) transformed the damaged library into MuseumLab for the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh.
The architect's design vision for the space was to restore the damaged structure but to also reveal the original architecture by stripping away layers of additions and materials that had been added over the years. MuseumLab provides universal access and improved environmental performance through the introduction of natural daylight into the interiors, new glazing, and insulation to upgrade the building envelope.
Spectrum Lighting collaborated with the architects to ensure that the lighting solutions were as unique as the architecture and provided specialized lighting solutions to each distinct space.
