The Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine (ICOM) designed by Dekker/Perich/Sabatini (D/P/S) needed solar solutions for the sun-soaked west side of campus. The architects settled on a stainless steel metal fabric since it offered numerous technical properties for combating solar heat gain and just as many aesthetic options.

A Multi-Functional Façade

In order to include ICOM branding on the facade, Omega 1510 metal fabric was suggested during the consultation between GKD and D/P/S since it is one of the best media to accept the etching process on top of being one of the top sun shading fabrics in GKD’s metal mesh portfolio, effectively filtering light yet affording a necessary degree of transparency.


GKD's architecture team provided solar control test data to demonstrate that Omega 1510 would offer optimal solar control without disrupting views of the campus from the inside. They derived wind loads, snow loads and live loads so that the tension of the mesh panel could be engineered to be compliant with local building codes.

Custom Etching

GKD’s custom capability provided an opportunity to underscore the ICOM brand identity. GKD’s proprietary etching process creates visual imagery that is durable, weather, and fade-resistant. Using flat-surfaced stainless-steel Omega and Lago metal fabrics, GKD can create highly contrasted images. Graphics applied through etching won’t chip, peel or fade over time as they might with a paint or coating solution.


GKD installed 20 panels of etched Omega 1510 metal fabric that span a length of the ICOM campus – approximately 2,340 square feet. The multifunctional fabric provides the campus with increased energy savings through solar control while adding to the comfort level of the building occupants and enhances the look with the prominent etched graphics.
