Located on the bank of the Ohio River, the Owensboro-Daviess County Convention Center hosts 40,000 ft² of exhibition space, nearly 30,000 ft² of meeting space and extensive public lobbies, service and support facilities. Organized over two levels, the building places the exhibition halls at ground level with the banquet and meeting facilities above celebrating the ground floor views of the river and the upper level views over the historic downtown area. The building appears as a beacon on the river in the riverside park alongside a performing arts centre and a Bluegrass Museum.
The building is a clean angular volume with a series or glass volumes wrapped in a striking metal skin. The architects - Trahan Architects - sought to minimise the flashing and panel joints in the metal skin to create a sleek metal cladding exterior that flows seamlessly from external cladding into the soffit. In order to achieve this the architects worked with the fabricators, MetalTech with one-off panel fabrication. The vertical orientation of the Anodized Aluminum Rainscreen – Vertical Interlocking Reveal Wall Panels and specific angular geometry required precise logistical planning, detailed field verification and tight fabrication tolerances to meet the project requirements.
With construction finished at the end of 2014, the building received the AIA Chicago, Distinguished Building Honor Award in 2017
