Both the depth and color of the facade implies what inhabits the inside of Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium. Three custom variations of blue recall the colors of the sea and give a cooling effect to the impact of the bold facade. In direct light, these blues have a pearlized hairline, giving further depth and visual interest. However, the most unique feature of this project are the metal tiles, purposefully designed to look like fish scales.
The goal of the project was to close the existing aquarium and open a new, state of the art facility allowing visitors to connect with and understand their impact on aquatic life. The client aimed to develop a place where locals and visitors alike could embrace and recognize PDZA's commitment to wildlife conservation.
The exterior design was to indicated what is inside, a massive aquarium. This was done by creating 3 custom finishes in variations of blue to create the connection to the ocean. The finishes were installed in flat lock panels and patterned, using controlled randomization, to create a fish scale effect.
