More about this product

The AC Hotel and Residence Inn by Marriott required a resilient and eye-catching exterior cladding, Neolith®, a leading brand of Sintered Stone, was specified for the project by the Galleria in Texas. The hotel sits at the center of a new, $4 billion mixed-use development in bustling Dallas Midtown, an area that has seen a revitalization set to transform the urban landscape of the sprawling Texan metropolis.

Dallas-based architecture firm 5G Studio Collaborative looked for a contemporary, 'out of the box' design which would also match the Marriott brand. The firm crafted an engaging aesthetic, paying homage to AC Hotels’ Spanish architectural heritage and European flair, while also incorporating Dallas’ modern architectural style with fabricated metal rainscreens. Creating a memorable first impression, the hotel’s 5,000-square-foot entrance façade features carefully designed trapezoid-shaped Neolith® Sintered Stone slabs carefully put together by local fabricator and installer Holland Marble.

Façade Material

In Dallas temperatures exceed 100 degrees for part of the year, infrastructure that stays cool is vitally important. Texas has a large population meaning that the hotel needed to withstand pollution, heat, and heavy footfall. The client requested a natural-looking material for the hotel façade, natural rock such as marble, however, tends to be easily stained and broken and is a poor choice for exterior applications due to its delicate composition.

Neolith® was suggested by the architects for its classic elegance and also because it is strong and long-lasting; it performs well against the elements, making it ideal for exterior cladding in a busy urban environment. Neolith® is established in applications such as kitchens and bathrooms, however, architects are increasingly specifying the brand for exterior cladding projects thanks to its versatility and durability.

The color used for the project was 'Calacatta', based on Italian marble and characterized by a uniform grey vein with hints of gold. The light color was essential to reflect the heat but was also an on-trend stylistic choice.

Installation

In addition to the slab design, Neolith® provided installation and technical support to the project through the implementation of its StrongFix system. The system is tailored specifically for each installation offering a complete package: the slabs, anchoring system, cutting and assembling services, and consulting all stem from a single source.
