More about this product

OmniMax, through CopperCraft, supplies copper roofing elements. CopperCraft hand-crafts architectural copper products such as dormers, spires, and cupolas by combining old world craftsmanship with modern-day technology and equipment. Skilled artisans deliver functional architectural products in both contemporary and historic styles. Products can be designed from the imagination or from their readily-available product selection.

Tavern on the Green

New York City’s Tavern on the Green in Central Park is one of the most recognizable restaurants in the city. The Victorian Gothic structure underwent various alterations over seven decades.

  • In 1934, it was converted into a restaurant
  • From 1934 to when the restaurant closed in 2009, the original 8,000-square-foot building grew to approximately 31,000 square feet.
  • In 2011, in an attempt to re-establish Tavern on the Green, the city retained Swanke Hayden Connell Architects, to restore the building.

The 12,000-square-foot restoration focused on rebuilding the facility as a restaurant. Working with a food services consultant, Swanke Hayden Connell Architects decided to reduce the building's footprint, removing years of inappropriate additions and restoring the building to its original footprint.

Recreating Historical Design

Wherever possible, historic drawings and photographs were used to inform the design and stay true to the original ornamental sheet metal details. The building’s curved louvers were used as templates for the new ones at the CopperCraft plant in Grapevine, TX. The Fabral engineering team also provided calculations for the project. CopperCraft provided the following elements for the project:

  • Recreated curved louvers
  • Fabricated copper cupola
  • Supplied 16-oz copper gutter for the built-in gutters
  • 20-ounce copper for flashings, ridge caps, standing seam roof panels, louvers, and ventilators

A replica of the old lead-coated copper cupola and underlying wood framing was made by Hudson Valley Roofing & Sheet Metal Inc., and Tri-State Metals. They also replicated the radius standing seam roof and ventilator at the restored 1947 north bar addition. Tri-State Metals fabricated the lead-coated copper and refurbished the large steel finial. The project also features 1,220 snow guards from Berger Building Products, Feasterville, Pa. The famous restaurant will reopen in December and is designed to achieve LEED Silver certification.
